Are female rappers becoming a dying breed? Where have they all gone, and how have they been able to disappear right before our ears?
Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, Eve, Remy Ma, DaBrat and Diamond from Crime Mob have all been arrested in the past three years, ultimately keeping them from what they do best, rap.
Rumors and gossip about the ladies have continued circulating throughout the media which has managed to keep their careers just above water.
How else would fans have known anything new about Lil Kim if she wasn’t sent to jail for perjury? Or how would they have known anything current about Foxy if she wasn’t charged with assault? Unfortunately, the ladies were caught up and have yet to make a come back.
There was some hope for Eve’s fans after she released “Tambourine,” supposed to be followed by an album. Instead, following the single, she was charged with a DUI and was later released.
After releasing her second album, Remy gained some exposure but mainly for assaulting her former friend. Crime Mob’s Diamond, sparkled for a minute and dulled after she was charged with aggravated assault. Lastly, DaBrat made news for hitting a girl in the head with a bottle and was sent to jail.
No disregard to Lil Mama and Trina, but the absence of feminine rap really has allowed masculinity to control hip-hop’s airwaves.
Even, still, there’s just something about Remy and a Diamond in the rough. No matter how bad Lil Kim is, her Foxy Brown strut kept our attention. Eve-n hip-hop misses Lauryn Hill and all it needs is DaBrat to snap back.
Damn! Never thought about this way, but this does make alot of sense! I was wondering what happened to Eve’s cd as I was awaiting for it to come out! Guess going to jail and being gangsta don’t sell as good when a lady does it like it does for men!
Its alot of females Rappers out there who can spit. Only problem is the industry aint signin. I’ve met plenty women down south and da east (Philly) who can flow better than these rappers out here thats gettin deals. Real Talk.
is remembering how much of a jammy jam Air Force 1's is.

I’m gonna play Devil’s advocate for a moment and argue two points.
1.) I think it’s a double standard in Hip Hop. Plenty of male Rappers have gone to jail or been arrested, but they still manage to keep their careers afloat. If anything, it helped boost their album sales.
2.) When a female rapper is jailed, I think a certain amount of respect is loss for them, because no matter how “Gangster” you think you are, you’re still considered a lady and should act as such. It’s almost as if they’ve lost their luster. Like they’ve been reduced from ghetto fabulous queens who are untouchable, to regular hood rats who can’t take themselves out of the hood mentality and grow up. Going to jail is not sexy. It’s much sexier to be a “bad girl” in the board room instead of a “sad girl” in the court room.
Stay up ladies, I love you all and hope to see you again. Shake up the industry and do an all girl hip hop mix tape or something. Let’s bring it back to ‘96′ when the fly bitches were running things in hip hop.
Make ‘09′ the year of the Female Rappers.
the answer is simple: female rappers are not marketable right now. Real talk. from a business standpoint, they aren’t. I don’t even think the world is ready for them on the regular yet. Now that I think about it, how many multi-million dollar albums to female rappers have? Missy, maybe Lil Mama, (i know there are others, but its sad that I can’t think of them). Look who owns these record labels, specifically the marketing budget female rappers have when it comes to pubbing their cds. Slim to none compared to men. That just goes to show that sexism still exists very heavily in the media and its sad considering that women are the majority of customers. Maybe women need to come real and not try to be so damn hard. I don’t know one female rapper I relate to other than Salt n Peppa and DaBrat, but that was waaaay back in the day. I know that there are talented female rappers out there, but the industry has yet to scope these girls out or give them the money they need to pub
Female rappers are still are not relvevant because they are not keeping it real…first Foxy Brown says suck my d*** in every verse I have heard from her in the last 2 years..Foxy you dont have a d***, the point is these ladies are trying to be too much like guys…they need to be true to their real lives..if you’ve had your heart broken write about it…if you s*** d*** rap about it, if you gettin money write about that, but it must feel real..
i dont think a lot of these female rappers have self respect, their lyric content is horrendous… they talk and often times behave jus like dudes, but without da “equipment” if u kno wut i mean… =P
i am not a huge “hip hop head” cuz quite frankly there r not a lot of people out there who r speakin on substance… its ok 2 speak ur mind on topics such as sex and other things of dat nature, but when dats ALL dat u bring out 4 da public 2 hear (not including wut else is actually on da CD) it becomes repetitive and repulsive…
i cant stomach 2 listen 2 trina or lil kim cuz i jus cant relate 2 them, i dont flaunt my sexuallity like dat and speak openly on wut i would do in da privacy of my home… other people like remy and shawna i couldnt really get into cuz i didnt like their presence, as far as bein masculine or “rough around da edges”…
i could get into music by missy, eve, hell even lil mama if i absolutely needed a dose of hip hop in my life, cuz i feel their vibes and wut they talk about (most of da time)… @ da end of da day, sex, drugs, and violence mite bring a lil cheese in da beginning but it aint gonna keep it on da table 4 long… and plz dont blame it on da streets and how u was raised cuz ANYONE can change, u dont have 2 keep dis agressive and/or sexual front up all da time… and i hate dat there aint more female lyricists out here cuz our voices need 2 b heard 2…
jean grae is the only female rapper i can stand right now. i still like older lil kim and missy and foxy. but right now their soo weak in the game. rap is watered down as it is, and female rappers are the worst.
Lets be honest, half of those chicks mentioned slept their way in the industry. Loved Lil Kim when she came out but it has been rumored that Biggie wrote the majority of her lyrics. Foxy and Eve love to floss in their riches and that is what the majority of their lyrics consist of. Trina shouldn’t receive any acknowledgement as a rapper because her mouth is filthy. She knows nothing to speak about other than sex. Remy Ma was just a time bomb waiting to explode. There was nothing that screamed a lyricist to me. As for Da Brat, well, her image ran its course. When it all boils down, Lauryn was the true essence of female hip hop. She talked about everything on her 1st album. It is just a tragic loss to female empowerment in this rap game. Do we like the whore image or the true female lyricist that is willing to educate?
Shawnna was another chick hip hop slept on. That chick has a flippin phenomenal flow. Stellar even. She was the hottest chick and still is to me. Her lyrical content held weight. She has all the make up of a male rapper, but she managed to keep her feminine side without all that eat my cooch, buy my Gucci bullshit.
Totally agree with you on Shawnna! She is the on the top of my list with spitting that str8 fire along with Vita and Charlie B-more! I tell you IRV messed up bad when he let them to leave let alone Ashanti! He had a bad ass record label with them ladies plus Ja and Lloyd! I guess Trina and Missy is going to have to carry the girls until they get back on their feet if they can
theblast is right, Jean Grae, Georgia Ann Muldrow, L A’s own Madam Brown, Medusa, Jack Davey,… i can go on for days, there is some bad a$$ female mc’s who have been putting it down for years, and i am sure you probably never heard of them, and you won’t, unless you dig or happen to go to a show, and see them. They are marketable but the game has to change. those female mc’s that i just named can serve half of the industry themselves. (that is from the heart) we got to-much b.s circulating the air waves and videos. i dont even like sayen the words “female m.c’s”, an mc is a mc period. youtube these m.c’s, ask your local radio dj’s have they heard of them, look at there myspace and facebook pages. if you dont ask or support, then their dreams hang on a wire, for our underground ears only and you miss out. (Lil Wayne is the male Jean Grae, and that is my word.) If you like Weezy-Baby then you will love Jean Grae.
Hate to say it but the only real and good decent female rapper is LADY OF RAGE to bad snoop never put her out there like that, but of course not to many people remember her even though she was in the friday movies
Females rappers, yup, we need them, Trina step up her game with this last CD, what about Missy, and Da Brat was raw ass hell. I’m not familar with Jean Grae, Michigan late sometimes!!
all that and still no mention of one of the hottest female rappers EVER…SHAWNNA>>> i feel you wit the lack of female rappers but the things they get caught up in is they fault…if they focus on they music and stop tryin to be superthugs(remy, brat, diamond…although i love em’ all) they could get alot more accomplished..what they should do is come together n some **** these niggaz type shit and stop waiting for one thes niggaz to help them blow(no pun intended)
