Tameka make some good points in this recent interview:
Often dark skinned women are considered mean, domineering and standoffish and it was these very labels that followed Michelle Obama during the campaign for her husband’s presidency and which she has had to work tirelessly to combat. I was appalled when I heard a Black woman refer to Michelle Obama as unattractive. The conversation turned into why President Obama picked her as his mate. No one in the witch-hunt made reference to the possibility that Michelle Obama was smart, funny, caring, a good person, highly accomplished or brilliant. Nor did they mention that she previously was President Obama’s supervisor. If she were fair skinned, petite with long straight or wavy hair, would the same opinions be linked to her? I seriously doubt it. It is believed that for the dark skinned, dreams are less obtainable.
In fact, I have read similar comments about myself that I am “dark, aggressive, bossy and bitchy.” It has been stated that my husband should have been with a “younger, more beautiful” woman. Astoundingly, the majority of the remarks come from African-American women and are mimicked by others. Sadly enough, I don’t know nor have I met 99% of those making these assertions. Funny, how we can judge another without having personally seen, interacted with or experienced a person’s character.
As I began to delve into further research on this topic, and the more I read, I concluded that many of our people do not like what they see in the mirror. Seeing one’s own reflection in another person and then to dissect it in an effort to destroy can only be the product of self-loathing. Why don’t we congratulate as opposed to hate?
Reading magazines, social media sites, watching our music videos, and television shows feed our appetites for all things beauty.” Rarely, however, do I see depictions of grace and elegance in the form of dark complexioned women. I Googled one of the more ethnic models, Alek Wek and I was saddened by the tone of what the bloggers wrote in reference to her complexion, features and hair texture. Ms. Wek’s escape from Sudan, her journey, philanthropy, and groundbreaking success as a supermodel in America is not only beautiful, but it displays her tenacity and character. African-Americans seem to have lost their eye for character.

With that being said, does everyone agree with Tameka?
I agree with her because I’ve often asked myself what is the fascination with lighter skinned women but this trend,or way of thinking I should say, didnt just start. It goes way back and for that reason, thos is going to become and age-old discussion with so many different opinions.
She’s right! Most people and not just African Americans refer to dark skinned women as unattractive. It doesn’t matter what the light skinned girl looks like, as long as she has long hair and light skin then she’s the bomb. However, there are a lot of people who assume that becuz a girl is light skinned, that all that weave must be her hair (Wrong!!!). People need to stop being so judgemental. Black women, learn to love yourself.
TAMEKA FOSTER IS A BEAUTIFUL AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN! I THINK WHAT SHE’S SAIDING IS SO TRUE! BEING A DARK SKINNED FEMALE MYSELF I CAN RELATED 2 WHAT SHE’S SAYING! THE DIFFERENT BETWEEN A DARK SKIN WOMAN AND A LIGHT SKINNED WOMAN IS,THE DARK SKINNED WOMAN SKIN GONNA STAY BLACK AND BEAUTIFUL AND SHINEY! THAT PRETTY BROWN SKIN FINE! WHEN THE LIGHT SKINNED WOMAN SKIN GONNA GET OLD AND WRINKLE AT A YOUNG AGE! LOL LOL! ANY WAYS! THE BLACKER THE BERRY THE SWEETER THE JUICE! LOL LOL
I agree with her. People today i swear are TOO consumed with looks. Like what about my personality?..all my accomplishments and my character! These are also things that define me, not just my physical apperance. I use to get, “Oh you’re so pretty to be darkskinned.” Like WTF is that! Please i do not respond well to ignorance, miss me with that shyt!. I’m beautiful because i am on the inside as well as the outside. People are sooo shallow these days obbessed with “Looks” RUS?? They better humble themselves b/c the Lord dont like ugly and your physical beauty can be taken away.
I agree with Mrs. Foster. Case in point, my child is darker than me right like I use to be around his age. My family do treat us different I notice, but fu#k ‘em. Now, my cousin who is dark skinned had a yellow baby, and they treat him like a piece of gold. It’s Fu#cked up, I know.Just the other day I was talking to a guy about this same subject in away. We was talking about the music videos, and I was saying how I was sick of seeing all these yellow bone girls in the videos(Like their are no other kind of beautiful black women). This fool told me that I would do because I was red, but if I was darker he would not think I was fine. So, I was like I can’t be fine because I was darker? He said,”I just do not fine dark skinned women pretty;some are cute but not pretty.”I told him that was a sack of sh#it if I ever heard any! Safe to say I do not even speak to that person anymore because I did not know he felt that negative way.
she’s telling the truth and quite eloquently i might add. it wasn’t an attack on light skinned women or black people. it was an accurate assessment and i’m in 100% agreement with her.
Pleas give it a rest tameka thats not even the case every one knows your getting a divorse usher moved on so dont make it a skin tone thing she just need to chil out and collect her child support check
Why the **** is Tameka always getting shitted on when people ASK HER for her opinion. Ain’t nobdoy said shit about Usher in this gotdamn story but leave it to a Nigga to call out her personal and private issues she is going though. I swear i hate niggaz, but i love black people
Y’all just came all up in this blog and proved the woman’s point. (those of you on that negative bullshit) We are a hateful, negative, crabs in a barrell syndrome havin ass race. If a man finds a dark woman attractive, he gets shitted on and talked about…nevermind that there is something deeper than that dark skin. Black people need to get over themselves forreal.
Chile is damn near the same complexion and we never heard her say “society discriminates against me because I’m dark-skin.”
Society discriminats against unattractive people no matter what your skin tone is.
I AGREE WITH HER 100%!BLACK PEOPLE ARE SO IGNORANT, HATEFUL, JEALOUS AND COLOR STRUCK. I CAN GO ON AND ON ABOUT THIS TOPIC, AND MY EXPERIENCES WITH THESE COLOR STRUCK BLACK MEN. THE MEDIA, VIDEOS AND CELEBRITY MEN.
BUT I WILL JUST SAY THIS MY BLACK WOMEN LOVE YOUR SELF. AND BE WITH THE PERSON WHO LOVES YOU ON THE INSIDE AS WELL AS THE OUTSIDE. WHO DONT SEE COLOR WHEN THEY LOOK AT YOU. BUT THEY SEE YOU FOR WHO YOU REALLY ARE. YOU ARE MORE THAN A WOMEN. YOU ARE A FIGHTER, YOU ARE STRONG, A NURTURER,A TEACHER,A MOTHER,A FATHER,A SISTER,INDEPENDENT, WE ARE A POWERFUL, BEUTIFUL BLACK FORCE TO BE RECKENED WITH!!
WE GIVE LIFE TO THIS WORLD!!! EVERY LIVING SOUL ON THIS EARTH CAME FROM ONE BLACK WOMEN!!! BUT YET THE BLACK MAN GIVES US HIS A*S*S TO KISS!!! SO I SAY TURN AROUND AND GIVE IT RIGHT BACK TO HIM TEN FOLD!! BE WITH THE MAN WHO MAKE YOUR HEART SMILE!! WHO APPRECIATES YOUR WORTH!!
AND YES I’AM A DARK SKIN WOMEN. I CONSIDER MYSELF A NUBIAN QUEEN! AND YES I CONSIDER MYSELF BEAUTIFUL.NOT BECAUSE PEOPLE TELL ME ALL THE TIME. BUT BECUASE OF THE BEAUTY THAT SHINES WITHIN MY SOUL!!
THIS SOME CRAZY SHIT!……..NOW, ER BODY WANNA AGREE WITH HER AFTER DOGGIN THE SHIT OUTTA HER……..ALL I CAN SAY IS, MAKE SOMETHING OUTTA URSELVES AND PROVE THEM MUTHA****AS WRONG…..MY GRANNY WENT THRU ALOT BECAUSE OF HER DARK SKIN, BUT GUESS WHAT, SHE GET ALL RESPECT FROM ERBODY CAUSE SHE KNEW WHERE SHE WAS GOING…..DONT LET THIS BE THE REASON…..STAND TALL AND DONT FALL…JUST LOOK @ OUR A-AMERICANS WHO DID MAKE IT! **** THE DUMB SHIT…..
Whew it’s unfortunate that this conversation continues to thrive amongst such a diverse, beautiful group of people. First of all, I agree to an extent with her comments, but don’t think for one minute light skinned women have it peaches and cream. I went through a terrible identity crisis in high school that followed me into my early 20s. I hated being mixed and I hated always having to validate my “blackness”. I always wanted to be dark-skinned, but all those girls hated me in high school. IT was almost as if I had a label placed on my back when I entered high school. I had no control of the texture of my hair (and in my opinion this curly crap isn’t “good” at all) and I did not push the boys in my direction. I was a product of two people whom loved each other and this is who I am! Sure, there are lots of ignorant black men that choose me over a darker skinned woman, but again I HAVE NOTHING to do with that. As I’ve grown older I’ve learned to weed out the ignorant people and accept myself for who I am! AND FYI @phylis the comment about lighter skinned women getting wrinkles and looking older, so untrue! Your genes are a direct link to how you will age along with how u take care of your skin. I am 33 and not one wrinkle,. My mother was 49 last yr when she passed and she looked 35… (she was white)… my father whom is black looks fairly young. I’ve seen black girls who look a lot older in their 20’s, it truly depends on your genes. In the end, none of us have control over who we are… we have to learn to accept and love one another. Peace * and yes that is tyrese in the pic with me*
I AGREE WITH HER ….HOWEVER SHE JUST UGLY LIGHT, WHITE, OR DARK SHE LOOK LIKE A MAN IN DRAG. SORRY BUT ITS TRUE. AND THERE ARE JUST ASS MANY UGLY UNATTRACTIVE, LIOGHT SKIN PEOPLE ……
A very beautiful woman hardly ever leaves a clear-cut impression of features and shape in the memory: usually there remains only an aura of living colour.
